Projects
The Society aims to carry out specific research projects in the short to medium term. Some are already underway:
War Memorial and Service History
By searching through military archives and contacting descendants or those who served in WW2 for more detailed information, we are steadily compiling a record of those commemorated on the village War Memorial.Oral history
We have already made a start recording villagers' recollections of early days in Milton, but we would welcome more folk participating in the project.Photographic archive
The Society has an archive of photographs relevant to the village which can be searched and viewed on this site. But we need more! We urgently need to copy your photos of Milton, old or new, to swell our existing records. Don't just forget about them or let your offspring throw them away - your photos will always be of interest to someone. Please contact us if you have some that you think may be of interest; we can visit you to scan the photos - they don't need to leave your posession!
Other projects which are planned for the future include:
Wells within the village
Back in the early 1900s there were at least 19 wells within the village at a time when Milton was smaller than it is today. Of course we benefit now from being on the public water supply system although there are still one or two wells in existence; however the water table has dropped considerably. The First and Second World War history
Fragmented records still exist of various troop movements in the village during both World Wars and work is in progress to bring this information together into one document. Milton even had troops in the area immediately prior to the D-Day Landings in WW2.Buildings history
There are many fine buildings in the village, some of which have changed little over the years. Others have either been altered or their purpose changed; a study to record these changes would be of interest and would add to the archives that already exist.Family history
This has become a very popular pastime and is now greatly enhanced by the use of the Internet to access numerous records. It is hoped that in the fullness of time members of the society or of the village will generate their own family tree and perhaps permit certain extracts to be included in our records.
If you have any information relating to these topics, or would like to get involved in one of the projects, please contact any officer of the Society.
